This new method involves heating the coconut in a 400 degree oven for a few minutes before cracking it open. All was going well as he preheated the oven until the faint smell of smoke filled the air and then the smoke detectors started to go off and by the time Brett made it to the kitchen black smoke was starting to billow out of the oven. Needless to say he was surprised to find my kitchen towel in flames...he quickly picked it, threw it out on the patio and doused it with water. Once again Brett convinced the boys he is their hero because he saved them from a devastating house fire!
Lessons Learned
1) Use whole wheat flour with a mixture of regular flour
2) Try not to forget what I put in the oven
3) Check always oven before turning on
4) Our smoke detectors really do work
5) Crate and Barrel Towels hold up really well

I am, of course, laughing while I read this, and Lydia is laughing along too! What a classic mistake (forgetting something in the oven). I have to say the best part is that Brett and the boys are STILL playing with coconuts! Will that ever get old?
Oh wow! So glad that Brett saved the day (and, I've definitely done something like that before - great lesson to learn!)
oh Nancy, I mean, Christina... you are so predictable. It's a good thing that you had a fire drill to keep everyone in the house on their toes in case a real one occurs ;)
This is "SO" something I would do :) I can totally relate!! I have learned many lessons realted to this :) I dont even make homemade rolls anymore because I have had so many problems :) I am going to consider buying those "Crate and Barrel Towels". They would REALLY come in handy in our house.
Glad the house did not burn down and everything turned out ok :)
BTW......Love the new blog look. The Christmas family picture is so cute :)
What a hero my son is!!! But you are such a wonderful cook and always trying something new, so you are forgiven!!!
